Angelica Kauffman

1741–1807 · Rococo & Neoclassicism

Biography

Angelica Kauffman (1741–1807), born in Chur, Switzerland, was a child prodigy who became one of the most successful painters of her time, working in London and Rome. Her studio in Rome was a meeting place for artists and writers, including Goethe.

From the artist’s life

Angelica Kauffman was a full member of the Royal Academy, one of the two female founding members of the institution established in 1768. The other woman artist, Mary Moser (1744–1819, pictured), was also an excellent painter, made famous above all by her flower paintings. Their activity is remarkable, since the next woman artist, the English painter and feminist Annie Swynnerton (1844–1933), was elected an associate of the Academy only in 1922.
