Berthe Morisot

1841–1895 · Impressionism

Biography

Berthe Morisot (1841–1895) was a founding member of the Impressionist group and exhibited in all but one of their shows. She painted mainly women and children in domestic settings with a free, luminous touch.

From the artist’s life

The two sisters, Berthe and Edma Morisot, shared a passion for painting. Berthe was fully aware that her sister’s interest in painting had evaporated with marriage and motherhood. Edma married in 1869 and gave up painting at a stroke. In 1874, at the age of thirty-three, Berthe Morisot married Eugène Manet. As a man of means her husband did not need to work and could encourage and support his wife’s painting career.
