Charles-François Daubigny
1817–1878 · Realism & Academic
Biography
Daubigny was born into a French family of artists and followed early in his father’s footsteps. Edmond-François Daubigny (1789–1843) was a classical landscape painter, and his brother Pierre, Daubigny’s uncle, a miniaturist. Daubigny trained under his father and as a young man painted fine details on snuffboxes, clocks and wooden panels. Daubigny got his first taste of landscape painting around Paris, including a short period in 1834–35 when he worked in the Forest of Fontainebleau, favoured by the Barbizon painters. The artist also trained his son, Karl, who likewise became an excellent landscape painter and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1863 until his early death in his forties.
