Charles Gleyre
1806–1874 · Realism & Academic
Biography
Gleyre originally studied the decorative arts in Lyon in southern France, then from 1825 began working in Louis Hersent’s studio in Paris and also attended the watercolour course of R. P. Bonington (1802–1828). Bonington was an English expatriate living in Paris who had a great influence on the Romantic painting of the early 19th century. From 1828 Gleyre lived in Rome for more than six years in straitened circumstances, but this period nevertheless proved fruitful, as he had the opportunity to study the ancient and Renaissance monuments of the Italian capital. Another example of his work is The Romans Passing Under the Yoke (pictured).
