Georges Braque
1882–1963 · Early Modern (Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism)
Biography
Tall, dark, strongly built and handsome, Braque stood out among the artists of Montmartre. He wore simple but well-cut suits, drove fast cars when his finances allowed, and was reputed to be an excellent dancer and musician; he once boasted to his agent that he could play Beethoven on his accordion. Since his schooldays he had been a passionate amateur boxer, pounding a sandbag in the mornings before work, and although he was known as a gentle man, when drunk he sometimes got into fights at his regular evening haunt, the Hermitage Café.
