Georgia O'Keeffe
1887–1986 · Early Modern (Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism)
Biography
The partnership of Georgia O'Keeffe and the photographer Alfred Stieglitz brought about profound changes in both their careers and became known as one of the most fruitful relationships in modern art. The couple first met in 1916 in rather strange circumstances: Stieglitz had organised an exhibition of O'Keeffe’s works, which he had obtained through one of her college classmates, without the artist’s permission. At their meeting O'Keeffe demanded that the photographer take down the exhibition, but in the end his will prevailed. This sullen beginning soon turned into love and led Stieglitz to leave his wife for the artist. For many years they were considered the dream couple of the American art world and lived in harmony until Stieglitz’s death in 1946.
