Giorgio Vasari
1511–1574 · Renaissance & Mannerism
Biography
In 1564 Vasari built the Vasari Corridor in Florence, an elevated enclosed walkway linking the Palazzo Vecchio with the Uffizi (the offices of the magistrates) and the Pitti Palace. The artist was commissioned by Cosimo I to design the tile-roofed passage, primarily for security reasons, so that the Grand Duke could cross undisturbed from his residence in the Pitti Palace on the south bank of the Arno to the government palace north of the river. Part of the corridor runs across the Ponte Vecchio (“Old Bridge”), which links the two banks of the Arno.
