Giorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli)
c. 1477–1510 · Renaissance & Mannerism
Biography
According to the painter and biographer Giorgio Vasari, author of The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects, Giorgione trained in the workshop of Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430–1516), creator of The Feast of the Gods (1514, pictured), perhaps at the same time as two other great Venetian exponents of the High Renaissance, Titian and Sebastiano del Piombo. Vasari attributes Giorgione’s veiled sfumato technique to the influence of Leonardo da Vinci, which is all the more likely since the Florentine Leonardo was in Venice around 1500.
