Giuseppe Arcimboldo
1527–1593 · Renaissance & Mannerism
Biography
Born in Milan, Arcimboldo served at the court of Maximilian II in Vienna from 1564 and was so well liked that he was kept on in the service of Rudolf II, the ruler’s heir. In 1583 the artist had to move to Prague when the court moved its seat there. Within a few years, however, he had had enough and asked permission to return home to Milan. This request was finally granted in 1587, just six years before his death from kidney failure.
