Biography
Alma-Tadema kept a catalogue of his works with conscientious precision. From 1851 he began numbering his paintings in Roman numerals, and from 1872 he put the numbers next to his signature on his pictures. The Roses of Heliogabalus bears the number opus CCLXXXIII (work 283), while his last work was opus CCCCVIII (work 408).
