Norman Rockwell

1894–1978 · Realism & Academic

Biography

In 1916, at only 22, Norman Rockwell painted his first picture for the cover of The Saturday Evening Post, which he described as “the greatest show window in America”. During his 47-year career with the magazine his paintings appeared on more than 300 covers, reaching millions of Americans. He depicted small-town America with great empathy, and besides actors and other popular American heroes he painted portraits of every major presidential candidate from 1952 to 1972.
