Théodore Géricault

1791–1824 · Romanticism & Landscape

Biography

Théodore Géricault (1791–1824) was one of the pioneers of French Romanticism. A passionate horseman, he painted horses, soldiers and dramatic modern subjects with great energy. In preparation for The Raft of the Medusa he interviewed survivors, had a model of the raft built, and studied the dying and the dead in hospitals and the morgue. After several riding accidents his health declined, and he died at the age of 32.
