Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti)

1518–1594 · Renaissance & Mannerism

Biography

Tintoretto was a prolific painter possessed of enormous artistic energy; he is thought to have created more than 500 works in his lifetime. At 20 he already considered himself an independent artist, but the mature phase of his career only began around 1548. The dates of the pictures attributed to him are uncertain; we know when only twenty of his works were made. Most art historians believe that Tintoretto painted the final version of The Last Supper in the year of his death, while others date the work earlier, to 1591–92.
