Walter Richard Sickert

1860–1942 · Impressionism

Biography

Sickert was the founder of the group of painters called the Camden Town Group. Many know him best for his pictures of North London, in which he depicted ordinary people in the grey, unfriendly surroundings of Camden Town and Islington. He also painted many nudes lying on beds, such as The Dutch Girl and his cycle of studies Mornington Crescent Nude. One of his series of pictures, The Camden Town Murder of 1907, caused a great outcry among the public, since its subject was the murder of a local prostitute.
