Family Reunion shows eleven members of the painter’s family gathered on the terrace of their country house at Méric, near Montpellier, in the shade of a large chestnut tree on a bright summer day.
A closer look
The relatives sit or stand stiffly, most of them looking straight at the viewer, almost like a group photograph. Yet the setting is modern: the figures were painted outdoors in natural light, with dappled sunshine falling through the leaves onto dresses and faces, and the hot, hazy landscape stretching behind them. Bazille included himself at the far left edge, half cut off, as if he had just stepped into the picture. The painting was accepted at the Salon of 1868.
