Barge Haulers on the Volga shows eleven exhausted men harnessed with leather straps, dragging a heavy barge upstream along a sandy riverbank under a blazing sun. It became one of the most famous images of nineteenth-century Russian Realism.
A closer look
The haulers advance towards the viewer in a long, bowed line, each with his own face and character: a wise older man at the front, a defiant youth in the middle trying to loosen his strap, others weary or resigned. Behind them, the vast, shimmering Volga and a distant steamship hint at the modern world that would soon make their work obsolete. Repin spent summers on the Volga studying real haulers, and the painting became a powerful symbol of human endurance and social injustice.
