This painting shows two large stacks of harvested wheat in a field near Monet’s home at Giverny, glowing in the warm, hazy light of late summer. It belongs to the famous series of around twenty-five canvases of the same motif.
A closer look
From the end of summer 1890 into the following winter, Monet painted the stacks again and again, in morning mist, midday sun, sunset, frost and snow. Here the stacks cast soft blue-violet shadows, and the hills and trees behind melt into the shimmering air. The simple, almost abstract shapes allowed Monet to focus entirely on the changing colour of light. When fifteen of the paintings were exhibited together in Paris in 1891, they sold out within days, bringing Monet financial security.
