This official portrait shows Eleanor of Toledo, Spanish-born wife of Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, seated with her young son Giovanni, dressed in a magnificent brocade gown, against a luminous blue background.
A closer look
The dress dominates the picture: white satin woven with black arabesques and gold pomegranates, a symbol of fertility, painted with a jeweller's precision, along with a gold net over the shoulders, pearl necklaces and a jewelled belt. Eleanor's face is pale, smooth and expressionless, like a marble mask, conveying dignity and distance rather than emotion. Her hand rests on her son's shoulder, presenting the heir who guarantees the dynasty. The portrait was a political image of Medici power and continuity, widely copied.
