This painting shows the skyline of Dresden across the river Elbe on a calm night, with the dome of the Frauenkirche and the tower of the Hofkirche silhouetted against a sky lit by a full moon breaking through clouds.
A closer look
The moon, partly veiled, casts a silvery path across the water and outlines the city's domes and spires. In the foreground, boats lie moored on the dark river bank, and a small fire glows where boatmen sit. Dahl, a close friend of Caspar David Friedrich, combined careful observation of light and atmosphere with Romantic mood. His nocturnal views were based on studies made outdoors, which gave them a freshness rare at the time. The painting also records how Dresden looked before its destruction in 1945.
