Flora shows the Roman goddess of flowers and spring standing in an orchard of orange trees, scattering blossoms from the folds of her pale pink gown, her long red-gold hair flowing around her.
A closer look
De Morgan painted Flora as a tall, graceful figure in the tradition of Botticelli, whose Primavera she had admired in Florence, where she lived for many years. Her robe, embroidered with flowers, swirls around her; roses and petals tumble from her hands; a bird perches in the branches. At her feet a scroll bears an Italian verse in which Flora announces that she comes from Florence to bring spring to the world. The luminous colour and the decorative detail reflect De Morgan's love of Italian Renaissance art.
