This vast panorama shows the Valley of Mexico seen from a rocky hillside to the north: a wide plain dotted with lakes, fields and villages stretches towards the distant capital, framed by mountains and the snow-capped volcanoes on the far horizon.

A closer look

In the foreground, a few small figures, a woman and children, walk along a path among cacti and rocks, giving scale to the immense landscape. Velasco, who also studied botany, geology and meteorology, painted every plant, stone and cloud with scientific precision, yet the clear light and the endless space give the view an epic, almost heroic quality. For newly independent Mexico, such panoramas became images of national identity, celebrating the beauty and history of the land.
