Henri Martin

1860–1943 · Post-Impressionism & Neo-Impressionism

Biography

Henri Martin’s talent was recognised early. After winning the prestigious Grand Prix of the fine arts school of his native Toulouse, he moved to Paris in 1879 to continue his studies. As a young artist his career received a great boost when he was awarded a scholarship abroad in 1885. The following year he travelled to Italy, his mother’s homeland, where he was captivated by the serenity of Venice. He depicted Venice in many of his pictures, but he conveyed the city’s majestic atmosphere through the play of light reflected on the water rather than through its architectural wonders. This experience made a deep impression on his artistic style. Barely four years later, in 1889, he won a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair after successfully presenting four of his paintings at the event.
