Post-Impressionism is the name given to painters of the 1880s and 1890s who started from Impressionism but went their own ways. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac built pictures from small dots of pure colour (Neo-Impressionism or Pointillism), Paul Cézanne sought the solid structure beneath nature’s appearance, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec captured Montmartre’s nightlife in bold outlines.
Vincent van Gogh used colour and swirling brushwork to express emotion, and Paul Gauguin looked for a simpler, more spiritual art in Brittany and Tahiti. Their freedom with colour and form led directly to the art of the 20th century; in Hungary, the visionary Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka followed a path of his own.
