Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka

1853–1919 · Post-Impressionism & Neo-Impressionism

Biography

Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka (1853–1919) was a Hungarian painter who created visionary landscapes of Hungary, Italy and the Middle East. Ignored in his lifetime, he is now considered one of Hungary's greatest artists.

From the artist’s life

Although his leased pharmacy gave him a decent income, Csontváry lived in modest circumstances, since he spent all his money on expensive travels. During his life he reached, among other places, Western and Southern Europe, the Tatra Mountains, Athens, Libya, Persia and Egypt. His unbroken faith was nourished by the experience of a voice that supposedly prophesied that he would become the world’s greatest “sun-path” painter (in more common terms, a plein-air, or open-air, painter), so great that he would surpass even Raphael.
