Paul Sérusier
1863–1927 · Post-Impressionism & Neo-Impressionism
Biography
Born into a Parisian upper-middle-class family, Paul Sérusier enrolled at the Académie Julian in 1885. Besides his talent for painting he was equally versed in music and languages and had a keen interest in philosophy. In 1888 he received recognition for his empathetically depicted interior shown at the Salon, The Weaver’s Workshop. Sérusier gradually fell in love with Brittany and settled there (although he continued to spend the winters in Paris). “I am more and more drawn to Brittany, my true homeland,” he wrote in 1893, “since it was here that I went through the process of my spiritual birth.” In his paintings he captured the tranquillity and ancient beauty of the Breton landscape together with its soberly impassive inhabitants in their distinctive dress.
