Károly Ferenczy

1862–1917 · Post-Impressionism & Neo-Impressionism

Biography

Ferenczy was a reserved figure who inspired respect; according to recollections, in Nagybánya he gave the impression of an English gentleman who had wandered into an uncivilised region. He practised several sports, and this interest is reflected in his pictures of riders and archers. His other passion was reading; he always arrived in Nagybánya with books, and an important reading experience is a recurring theme in the surviving family correspondence. Very characteristic of him is the anecdote that he never again agreed to play billiards with one of his fellow painters, because he deeply despised him for playing not for the joy of the game but only to win.
