Pieter de Hooch

1629–1684 · Baroque & Dutch Golden Age

Biography

Pieter de Hooch (1629–1684) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his serene domestic scenes and sunlit courtyards, with their carefully constructed views from one space into another.

From the artist’s life

Pieter de Hooch owes his fame mainly to the works he made in Delft, and most critics agree that the quality of his Amsterdam pictures was variable, and that from 1680 he painted increasingly weak pictures. De Hooch spent his last days in the Dolhuis lunatic asylum, but it is not known whether the decline of his art can be linked to his illness.
