Baroque & Dutch Golden Age
71 paintings in this gallery
Baroque painting, from around 1600, set out to move the viewer: dramatic light and shadow, bold diagonals and moments caught at their most intense. Caravaggio’s raw realism and stark contrasts of light and dark spread across Europe, shaping painters from Artemisia Gentileschi to Georges de La Tour, while Peter Paul Rubens filled vast canvases with energy and colour, and Diego Velázquez painted the Spanish court with breathtaking freedom.
In the newly independent Dutch Republic, a prosperous merchant public bought paintings for their homes, and artists specialised in portraits, landscapes, still lifes and everyday interiors. This Dutch Golden Age produced Rembrandt’s searching portraits and Johannes Vermeer’s and Pieter de Hooch’s quiet rooms full of light.
