This painting shows a French peasant family gathered in their dim, bare house around a simple meal of bread and wine. Three generations sit and stand in silence, a boy plays a pipe, and children, a dog and a cat complete the group. Most of them look straight at us.

A closer look

There is no story and no action, only quiet presence. The figures are painted almost life-size, with great dignity: the grandmother holds a glass of wine, the father cuts bread, and their faces are calm, serious and individual. The light falls softly from the left on a fire at the back and on the tablecloth, and the colours are muted browns, greys and whites. At a time when peasants were usually shown as comic or crude, the Le Nain brothers painted them with respect and gravity, and the bread and wine may also carry a religious meaning, recalling the Eucharist.
