Biografía
Everett Shinn led an eventful life. The handsome, refined artist married and divorced four times and suffered heavy losses in the stock market crash of 1929. He loved spending time in shabby cabarets and vaudeville theatres (and trying out the acrobatic stunts he saw on stage in the lobbies on the way out). He had an incredibly busy artistic career. He began as a newspaper illustrator or, as he liked to call it, a “visual reporter” at the Philadelphia Press, where his talent for quick sketches and the eye-catching compositions he made for his varied reports made him an extremely successful artist. In 1897 he moved from Philadelphia to New York, where he worked as an illustrator for the New York World. His style developed further, and his quick brushstrokes and good sense of drama became his trademarks. The ability to capture the moment proved useful throughout his career; this spontaneity can also be seen in Dancer in White before the Footlights. It was then that he joined his like-minded fellow painters in the Ashcan School. Bursting with creative energy, Shinn did not confine himself to painting and newspaper illustration; from 1917 to 1923 he worked as art director at the world-famous MGM studio.
