Charles Camoin

1879–1965 · Début de l’art moderne (fauvisme, cubisme, expressionnisme)

Biographie

Although his fame has now been eclipsed by some of his famous friends and contemporaries, Charles Camoin was an extremely successful and widely recognised artist in his own time. As a teenager he was already considered highly promising, and winning a major painting competition gave him the opportunity to move from his native Marseille to Paris, the centre of the art world, and attend Moreau’s studio. In 1955, a decade before his death, he also received state recognition for his services to the arts: he was awarded his country’s highest distinction, the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honour.
