Jackson Pollock
1912–1956 · Surréalisme, dada et abstraction
Biographie
Pollock was an unstable character who struggled with lack of self-confidence and alcoholism throughout his adult life. Raised in Arizona and California, the boy was expelled from two schools; eventually his caring elder brother invited him to New York as an art student. During his stay in New York he took part in several government-initiated, publicly funded projects and became interested in mural painting. His first monumental canvas, six metres wide and made in 1943, is titled Mural. The picture was commissioned from Pollock by Peggy Guggenheim (pictured), and he painted it in one night and a morning.
