This group gathers paintings that stand outside the main currents of European art. Naïve painters, without academic training, developed direct and highly personal styles: Henri Rousseau, a Paris customs official, painted dreamlike jungles he never saw, and in America Edward Hicks painted his visions of a Peaceable Kingdom.
It also includes works from other great traditions: Chinese landscape painting, as in the monumental mountains of Fan Kuan; Mughal court painting, as by Bichitr; the Japanese woodblock prints of Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, which deeply influenced the Impressionists; and the Bengal School of Abanindranath Tagore.
