Fine Wind, Clear Morning, often called Red Fuji, is one of the most celebrated prints in Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The sacred mountain glows red in the early morning sun of late summer or early autumn.
A closer look
The composition could hardly be simpler: the red slope of the volcano, streaks of snow at the summit, a band of dark forest at its foot and rows of small white clouds across a deep blue sky. Hokusai captures a real phenomenon, the brief moment when the rising sun turns the mountain’s bare slopes a reddish colour. With only a few colours and broad areas of flat tone, the print achieves great monumentality on a small sheet of paper.
