The Census at Bethlehem transposes the Gospel story of Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem to be registered for a Roman tax into a snowy Flemish village at dusk. The holy couple are almost lost among the crowd.
A closer look
At the bottom centre, Mary rides a donkey, wrapped in blue, led by Joseph carrying a large saw, a sign of his trade; an ox follows them. Most villagers ignore them. Crowds gather at an inn on the left, where officials collect taxes at a window, a scene familiar to Bruegel's contemporaries under Spanish rule. Children slide and skate on the frozen pond, people slaughter a pig, others warm themselves by a fire. A red sun sets behind bare trees. The sacred event happens unnoticed within ordinary daily life.
